While this trend was initially concentrated in software and tech roles, AI now appears in many other categories, including sales, management and education \u2013 a sign that AI-related skills, tasks and tools are becoming mainstream across the labour market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For our research, we analysed Indeed\u2019s \u201cnormalised\u201d job titles: detailed occupations that group similar job postings under a common label. For example, postings for \u201cAI Engineer (Autonomous Agents)\u201d, \u201cApplied AI Engineer\u201d and \u201cAI Engineer &#8211; Urgently Needed\u201d all fall under the label \u201cAI Engineer\u201d, defined consistently across countries and time. Statistical agencies such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics use a similar, but less granular approach, to classify occupations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We define a job title as \u201cAI-touched\u201d when at least five postings for a particular job title mention AI in the employer\u2019s raw job title in a given quarter. The five-posting threshold filters out one-off mentions, isolating job titles where AI language has become part of how employers define roles. We focus on job titles rather than job descriptions because descriptions can <a href=\"https:\/\/hiringlab.indeed.com\/2025\/10\/28\/how-employers-are-talking-about-ai-in-job-postings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mention AI in contexts<\/a> unrelated to the role itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A small but growing share of Australian titles are \u201cAI-touched\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the March quarter 2026, 71 normalised job titles in Australia included at least five postings mentioning AI in their raw job title \u2013 around 1.6% of all job titles. First, Australia\u2019s adoption of AI appears slower than in other countries. The number of \u201cAI-touched\u201d job titles <a href=\"https:\/\/hiringlab.indeed.com\/2026\/07\/08\/ai-is-no-longer-just-a-tech-occupation-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">falls well short of Indeed markets<\/a> in North America and Europe. Australia\u2019s smaller job market, which includes fewer job titles, helps explain part of that gap, but usage still remains low. Second, \u201cAI-touched\u201d job titles in Australia remain more heavily concentrated in tech than in other markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, compared to many international markets, Australia has a <a href=\"https:\/\/data.indeed.com\/#\/ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">higher share of job postings that mention AI in their job descriptions<\/a>. This suggests that Australian AI adoption might be more surface level \u2013 a <em>part<\/em> of the job but not necessarily <em>central<\/em> to the job.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jobs with AI in their title are still primarily tech roles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the March quarter, 61% of \u201cAI-touched\u201d job titles were in the tech sector. However, AI jobs in non-tech occupations still seem less common in Australia than in most other Indeed markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the United States, 63% of \u201cAI-touched\u201d job titles are in non-tech occupations, compared with 59% in Germany, 58% in the Netherlands and 54% in both France and the United Kingdom. Our \u201cAI-touched\u201d measure, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/data.indeed.com\/#\/ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indeed\u2019s AI tracker<\/a>, suggests that AI tools continue to diffuse through Australian workplaces. Jobs are evolving and being redefined as AI\u2019s importance grows.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For jobseekers, the implication is that AI is becoming part of the expected toolkit across a growing range of roles. In Australia, that shift remains concentrated in the tech sector for now, but it\u2019s slowly changing. Workers don\u2019t necessarily require deep technical knowledge, but those who can demonstrate familiarity with AI and explain how they use it in their work are potentially better positioned as employers make that expectation increasingly explicit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Methodology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This post analyses Indeed job postings from the March quarter 2022 to the March quarter 2026. A normalised job title is defined as \u201cAI-touched\u201d in a given quarter when at least five postings under that label include \u201cAI\u201d, \u201cGenAI\u201d&nbsp; or \u201cartificial intelligence\u201d in the employer\u2019s raw job title.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Indeed\u2019s normalised job titles group very similar postings under a single, consistently defined occupational level, making them comparable across countries and over time. They are more granular than standard occupational classifications used by statistical agencies.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australian employers are writing AI
